The concern that the new insect ingredients will “secretly” end up in food is unfounded in the view of Lebensmittelklarheit. A market check by the consumer centers from 2020 showed that foods with insects have so far still been relatively expensive, but the insect ingredients were clearly recognisable. In our view, there is no interest on the part of the industry to mix in insects “unnoticed”.

By the way: one of the oldest foodstuffs obtained from insect excretions is honey.

If insects were used in the production of the product, you should be able to recognise this by one of the following labels on the list of ingredients:

  • „Acheta domesticus (Hausgrille, Heimchen), gefroren“
  • „Acheta domesticus (Hausgrille, Heimchen), getrocknet/pulverförmig“
  • „getrocknete Larven/Pulver aus Larven von Alphitobius diaperinus (Getreideschimmelkäfer)„
  • „gefrorene Larven/Paste aus Larven von Alphitobius diaperinus (Getreideschimmelkäfer)„
